Plan your charter
What to pack for a Hampton Roads fishing charter
Pack with the operator’s instructions beside you. The useful list has three parts: what the boat supplies, what you need during the trip and what should wait in the car for the return.

Check what is already aboard
Betty Lou’s trip details list fishing equipment, licensing, ice and bottled water. Other operators describe their own inclusions. Check the selected boat’s instructions before packing your own gear or drinks.[3]
Ask about drinking water, lunch, tackle and space for personal gear before filling a bag. If you want to bring a favorite rod, explain what it is and ask whether it suits the planned method. Bringing more equipment than the boat can store creates a problem before you start fishing.
Pack for the hours you will spend aboard
Choose a compact bag that you can manage while boarding. Put your phone, reservation details and small valuables in a protective pouch. Add agreed food and drinks, sun protection, sunglasses, a suitable layer and rain protection. These are planning suggestions; the operator’s storage and prohibited-item instructions take priority.
Keep the things you may need first close to hand, rather than at the bottom of a large cooler. Ask where a bag should go once aboard. If your group brings several bags, decide who carries shared items so you do not arrive with three bulky versions of the same thing.
For children, build the bag around the actual family trip and the operator’s instructions. Our first family charter guide covers the earlier conversation about passenger ages, life-jacket fit, facilities and time on the water.
Read the boat’s footwear, food and drink rules
Marcia B asks for light-colored, non-slip soles and lists rain protection among things to bring. AfishinadoVB publishes restrictions on spray sunscreen and hard liquor; Betty Lou prohibits glass. Check the instructions for your own reservation; another boat may have different rules.[2] [1] [3]
Ask before substituting an item that seems equivalent. A personal cooler, sunscreen spray or pair of shoes may be ordinary on land and still conflict with a boat’s deck or storage policy. Sort that out the evening before, when there is time to choose something else.
Plan the catch cooler separately
AfishinadoVB says a cooler for taking fish home can stay in the car until the trip returns. That separates the bag needed aboard from return-trip storage. It does not promise fish to take home or establish another operator’s cooler policy.[1]
If you hope to retain fish, ask about lawful retention, cleaning, packing and ice before departure. Have a plan for prompt cold storage, including the journey after the dock. Our catch-handling guide goes into that return journey; a cooler left in a hot car without adequate cooling is not a complete plan.
Do the final check before you leave home
Save the meeting instructions, not just a marina name found in a search result. Check the latest operator message, requested payment method and agreed arrival time. Charge your phone and tell the rest of the party what belongs in their bags. Ask individual health or medication questions of an appropriate clinician rather than treating a packing article as personal medical advice.
- Carry aboard, if approved: compact bag, agreed food/drinks, layers, sun and rain protection.
- Have reservation and exact meeting instructions available offline.
- Leave bulky return coolers or spare gear in the car only if the operator directs.
- Confirm prohibited items and footwear for the actual vessel.
- Check how any retained fish will stay cold after return.
